Tobogganing in the Pitztal: Natural Runs by Day and Night
Winter Can Be Fast Too
A day of tobogganing usually begins slowly. You walk uphill or take a lift, the winter air becomes clearer and anticipation grows with every metre. Then you sit down, hold on to the sledge – and suddenly the quiet landscape becomes a wonderfully entertaining descent.
The Pitztal offers twelve toboggan and natural toboggan runs with more than 21 kilometres in total. Some are short and family-friendly, while others run for several kilometres into the valley. A few can be enjoyed in the evening, when only the illuminated track and snow beneath the runners remain.
The Hochzeiger Natural Toboggan Run
The valley’s best-known toboggan run is at Hochzeiger. From the middle station, it leads around six kilometres down to Jerzens. The cable car takes care of the ascent, leaving more time for the descent.
On selected dates, the run is illuminated for night tobogganing. Opening, lift operation and evening dates depend on snow and the season. Always follow the current information from Hochzeiger Bergbahnen.
The run is long enough that warm clothing, sturdy shoes and controlled riding are important. Children should only toboggan with suitable supervision.
Tobogganing around Mandarfen
The rear Pitztal also offers opportunities for an evening on a sledge. Depending on snow and operating conditions, tobogganing activities are available at the Mandarfen practice lift. For guests of the Mandarfner Hof, this is particularly easy: the winter fun is right in the village, with no long journey back in the evening.
Please check locally which dates are offered and whether equipment hire is available. Natural snow cannot be forced into a fixed calendar.
More Toboggan Runs in the Pitztal
Small and larger natural runs are spread throughout the valley, often combined with a winter walk or a stop at a mountain hut. The best route depends on experience, snow conditions and the length you would like.
Before you start, check:
- Is the run currently open and prepared?
- Is it illuminated, or do you need a headlamp?
- Is sledge hire available?
- Is the ascent on foot or by lift?
- Are there oncoming users or shared sections with hikers?
The current overview from the tourism association will help you choose.
Toboggan Safely
Tobogganing looks simple, but it requires attention. Speed, icy sections and other winter-sports users are easily underestimated.
Our most important tips:
- Wear a helmet – adults too.
- Wear sturdy, high shoes with good grip.
- Use only approved toboggan runs.
- Adapt your speed to the conditions.
- Do not stop in the middle of the run.
- Supervise children according to their ability.
- Make sure you are clearly visible at night.
- Never toboggan under the influence of alcohol.
A Winter Evening to Remember
Tobogganing is not a replacement programme for a day without skiing. It is a winter experience in its own right – uncomplicated, sociable and often much more fun than expected. Afterwards, return to the warmth, perhaps for a tea or straight to dinner.
From the Mandarfner Hof, the valley’s toboggan runs are easy to reach by bus or car. Discover more experiences under Winter Holidays in the Pitztal.
