The Rifflsee in Pitztal
The Rifflsee in Pitztal – a place where wonder is simply allowed
At 2,232 metres lies the highest mountain lake in Austria. For guests staying at Mandarfner Hof, a short walk to the Rifflseebahn cable car is all it takes to discover a mountain world that stays with you long after you've left.
Here's what awaits you at the Rifflsee, which hikes are worth doing, and why a visit belongs to any Pitztal summer.
What makes the Rifflsee so special?
Shimmering water above 2,000 metres, glaciers and three-thousanders all around, and a stillness that you simply absorb. The Rifflsee is no ordinary mountain lake. It's what the locals call the "living room of Tyrol."
Standing up here, you immediately understand why Pitztal is considered one of the most unspoilt valleys in Tyrol. No mass tourism, no overcrowded promenades. Just nature, wide-open space and the quiet feeling of being in exactly the right place.
At a glance:
- Altitude: 2,232 m above sea level
- Highest mountain lake in Austria
- Accessible by the Rifflseebahn from Mandarfen
- Open: June to October (weather dependent)
What you can experience at the Rifflsee:
The Raft Trip
You're allowed to be a little amazed: the Rifflsee is home to the highest-altitude raft trip in Europe. For around 45 minutes you glide across the turquoise water, surrounded by nothing but mountain peaks and sky. For couples, families and anyone who simply wants to pause – this trip stays in the memory for a long time.
Hiking right at the lake
Around the Rifflsee there are paths for everyone. Families will find pram-friendly walks right along the shore. Those looking for more can set off from here on one of the most beautiful tours in the region.
Two-Lakes Round via Ploder See Moderate | approx. 3–4 hrs | 400 m elevation | Start: Rifflseebahn mountain station – A circular route with two mountain lakes, stunning panoramas and a relaxing stop at the Sunna Alm mountain hut.
