Café 3440 in the Pitztal: Coffee above the Clouds
A Coffee Break at 3,440 Metres
There are cafés with beautiful views. And then there is Café 3440 at the Pitztal Glacier. Austria’s highest coffee house and confectionery lies on the Hinterer Brunnenkogel, high above the valley and directly opposite the Wildspitze.
The journey up is part of the experience. From the valley, the Gletscherexpress takes you into the ski area, followed by the Wildspitzbahn to 3,440 metres. At the top, modern architecture, homemade cake and a panorama make conversation unnecessary for a moment.
How to Reach Café 3440
The ascent begins at the Gletscherexpress valley station at the end of the Pitztal. From Mandarfen, it is only a few minutes by bus or car.
After the Gletscherexpress, the Wildspitzbahn continues up to the café. Skiers can combine the visit with a day in the glacier ski area. Pedestrians can also ride up when the lifts are operating.
Before your trip, check:
- Are the Gletscherexpress and Wildspitzbahn open?
- Is the café open?
- Which pedestrian tickets are available?
- What are the wind, visibility and weather conditions?
- When is the last lift down to the valley?
At this altitude, operations can change at short notice. The current information from the glacier lifts is always decisive.
The Wildspitze Close Enough to Touch
From the panoramic terrace, you look towards the Wildspitze, Tyrol’s highest mountain and Austria’s second-highest. Around it rise the glaciated peaks of the Ötztal Alps.
On clear days, the view is wide. In cloud, it becomes more dramatic; sometimes the world disappears completely into white for a few minutes. Both are part of being at altitude.
Coffee, Cake and an In-House Confectionery
Café 3440 is special not only because of its location. Cakes and pastries come from its own confectionery. They taste good after a morning of skiing, but just as good after a purely panoramic ride.
If you arrive at peak times, allow a little patience. A window seat or a place on the terrace cannot be guaranteed – the view remains impressive anyway.
What You Need for the Excursion
Even when the sun is warm in the valley, it is much colder at 3,440 metres. We recommend:
- a warm jacket and sturdy shoes
- sunglasses and sun protection
- enough time for the ascent and descent
- a slow pace at altitude
- current operating information
If you are sensitive to altitude, move calmly, drink enough and descend if you feel unwell.
From the Highest Café Back to Mandarfen
After so much open space, returning to the Mandarfner Hof feels especially comforting. Perhaps you go straight to the sauna, perhaps stop for an afternoon snack or simply spend some time in your room.
Café 3440 is not an ordinary stop. It is a small excursion to the roof of Tyrol – and a winter experience that works perfectly without skis.
