Hiking at the Hochzeiger in Pitztal
There are mountains you climb.
And there are mountains where you simply want to be at the top. The Hochzeiger in Pitztal is both.
From Jerzens, the Hochzeigerbahn cable car takes you to around 2,550 metres in just a few minutes. What awaits you up there is exactly what people come to Pitztal for: silence, wide open slopes, and a breathtaking panorama.
You're allowed to simply stand up here and look around. That's perfectly fine.
Hiking at the Hochzeiger: What to Expect
The trails around the Hochzeiger are among the most varied in Pitztal. Those who prefer a leisurely pace can follow the panoramic path along the ridge. Those looking for more kilometres will find connections into the Vallerkar or down to Wenns. Most routes are well marked and suitable for experienced hikers as well as active holidaymakers without climbing experience.
The Hochzeigerhaus on the summit plateau is a great starting point. It also has a restaurant for those who need a coffee or a bowl of soup after the cable car ride. That's perfectly acceptable too.
Cycling up? That works too.
The Hochzeiger is a popular destination for mountain bikers in summer. Bikes are permitted on the gondola, which greatly expands the range of descents available. If hiking isn't your thing and you'd rather ride, this is the place for you.
Getting from Mandarfen to the Hochzeiger
Mandarfner Hof is located in Mandarfen, right at the valley station of the Rifflseebahn. The Hochzeiger is about a 20-minute drive to Jerzens. No car? In summer, the Postbus operates a shuttle service connecting the main points in the valley. Ask at reception for the current timetable – we're happy to help.
If you want to do both in one day – the Rifflsee in the morning and the Hochzeiger in the afternoon – our tip is: plan two days instead. Pitztal is not a place to rush.
What to Pack
Sturdy footwear at the Hochzeiger is not a recommendation – it's a must. Even though the gondola takes care of the altitude gain, the terrain up top is uneven and can be wet depending on the weather. High-altitude sunscreen, a windproof jacket and plenty of water are essentials. Mountain weather can change faster than you'd expect.
Back to the Valley
In the evening, dinner awaits at Mandarfner Hof. Dominik and his team cook with what the region has to offer – local, seasonal and with real passion. After a long day at altitude, that's exactly what you need.
You're allowed to arrive. And eat well. And sleep soundly.
