Learning to Ski at the Mandarfen Practice Lift
Your First Turn Can Be Small
You do not learn to ski between hurry and high expectations. It is best to begin where the terrain is manageable, the distances are short and every small success can be followed by another attempt. That is exactly what the Mandarfen practice lift is for.
The beginner area is right in the village and only a few steps from the Mandarfner Hof. Children, adult beginners and returning skiers can practise here without first having to travel to a large ski area.
A Practice Lift for Your First Days
At the practice lift, the aim is not to collect as many kilometres as possible. It is about balance, braking, turning and confidence. The terrain is ideal for first exercises and can easily be combined with a ski course.
It is particularly convenient for beginners:
- a manageable slope instead of a large piste map
- short repetitions and quick learning progress
- a children’s area and ski-school programmes
- a lift ticket for the practice area may be available
- sports shops and equipment hire in the village
- short walks back to the hotel
Which facilities, courses and tickets are available depends on the season and snow conditions. Please check with the ski school or at the practice lift in advance.
Ski Courses for Children and Adults
Children learn differently from adults. In the children’s area, playful exercises, safety and the joy of movement are the focus. Adults often benefit from building the basics step by step with a ski instructor instead of being somehow guided down the slope by friends.
A course can help with:
- braking and stopping safely
- controlled first turns
- using the lift correctly
- a balanced body position
- behaviour on the piste
Those who want individual instruction can book a private lesson. The pace then follows their own goals.
When Is It Time for the Larger Ski Area?
The right time is not reached after a fixed number of hours. Once you can brake safely, turn with control and use the lift independently, discuss the next step with your instructor.
The route from the practice lift to Rifflsee is particularly short. The Rifflsee cable car starts right in Mandarfen, with alpine skiing waiting above. Even on the first day in a larger area, an honest assessment is worthwhile: it is better to enjoy a suitable easy piste than to want too much too soon.
Practical for Families
If one part of the family is learning to ski while the others are already experienced, Mandarfen makes holiday planning easier. Beginners stay at the practice lift, while experienced skiers start across the road with the Rifflsee cable car. Later, everyone meets again in the village or at the hotel.
Not every holiday day has to look the same for everyone. And nobody has to spend it travelling long distances between hotel, ski school and lift.
Our Tips for Relaxed First Ski Days
- Reserve your course and equipment in good time.
- Start with warm, well-fitting ski boots.
- Plan several short sessions rather than one long first day.
- Take breaks before concentration and strength run low.
- Check current opening information and snow conditions.
- Celebrate small steps – they are the important ones when learning to ski.
Afterwards, Let the Winter Day Feel Easy
Back at the Mandarfner Hof, warmth, an afternoon snack and a place to rest are waiting. Maybe today brought only one turn. Maybe it was already your first complete descent. Both are a beginning.
